Prayer for Healing: Overcoming Health Challenges through Faith

At the start of the summer, I found myself in the grip of relentless headaches and stomach pains. The severity of these symptoms was such that I had to step back from my volunteer work, uncertain of how I would feel each day. Some days, I almost forget the pain, but then I’d be hit with a string of three consecutive days of agony. This disrupted my entire week, leaving me with less time to finish my tasks. The most heartbreaking part was feeling like I couldn’t be there for my family as I wanted to be.

Despite my efforts to sustain a healthy lifestyle, including changing my diet, going to doctor’s appointments, and enduring tests, I still wasn’t feeling well most days. Sadly, the summer seemed to drag on endlessly as my energy levels plummeted, and life felt bleak.

Praying for Healing

During this process, I prayed many prayers for healing. Because of my faith, I knew there was nothing too big or too small that God couldn’t heal.

Does any of this sound familiar? Whenever our health takes a downturn, we turn to doctors, nutrition, and, most importantly, God in prayer.

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” Matthew 7:7-8

Here are prayer points to consider as you pray for healing. It’s more than a one-and-done type of prayer. It’s a series of prayers to God who hears you. You may want a miracle because you are tired of your physical challenges—I know I did—but we are learning to be faithful in our prayers and to talk to Him about our health.

Prayer Points

  • Pray for symptoms. There are many causes of disease and suffering. Take time to pray through uncomfortable symptoms. From small to large, offer it in prayer to God. For example, “God, please relieve my headache.”
  • Pray for the root cause. When you know the root cause, pray specifically about it.
  • Pray for Doctor visits and tests. When you go to the doctor, pray that God will give your doctor wisdom on tests, test results, and next treatments. God often uses doctors to prescribe healing solutions to what ails us.
  • Pray about prescribed life changes. Pray about changes you can make in your environment, diet, and exercise to help heal. When God heals you, you don’t want to feel terrible because you ate your way there again. Continue habits that keep you well.
  • Ask for forgiveness and forgive others. Repent and ask for forgiveness and/or forgive others of sinful actions that affect you.
  • Pray for family members. If it’s a disease that runs in your family (and it usually does), then it’s time to ask God to deliver you from this disease that runs through your family line. You don’t want your kids or grandkids to suffer too. Nobody does. So make sure to declare that this disease stops here and now and will not go down for future generations.
  • Seek God for guidance. Seek and continue to seek God for guidance in what to pray for and what treatment and life changes you need to take.

These points of prayer took all summer to pray through. I’ve listed them here for your convenience but know that as you pray, God is faithful, and He will lead you to other prayer points. Consider writing them down and making your own prayer list.

Pray this Prayer

Dear Jesus, I am not doing well. My body is sick, and I need your healing touch. I don’t know everything that’s going on inside my body, but you see everything. Please make me well again. Deal with the root cause. And relieve these painful symptoms. Lead me to a medical team that can help me sort out what’s going on with my body. I pray for strength to make the necessary life changes I need to make. I confess I haven’t treated my body well by not being careful with what I eat, do, or don’t do. Please forgive me. God deliver me, my children, and my grandchildren from this terrible debilitating disease. Make me and my family well in Jesus’ Most Powerful Name, Amen.

Whether you prayed this prayer aloud or quietly in your own heart, God heard you. He loves you and cares about your health. Faithfully continue to reach out in prayer.

My Prayers were Answered

I’m happy to say that I’m feeling much better now. My headaches have disappeared, and my stomach is also feeling better. I just received the results of my tests, and everything is clear. I’m grateful to see evidence of God’s healing in both how I feel and in the tests and scans.

In the future, when there are days when I don’t feel good again, I will put my faith in God and review what I’ve learned through this process of regaining my health. I will prayerfully make changes because I do not want to return to feeling unwell.

  1. I pray that the Lord will touch your body with his powerful hands and heal you miraculously. In Jesus name, Amen. I will continue to pray for your health. Blessings

    1. Beverley, thank you for praying for me. God has been so faithful even when it was so hard this summer. I learned to rely on his grace and leading in a whole new way.

  2. Hi Kim. I am catching up. So sorry to hear of your suffering this year. I am glad you are feeling better now. All praise to the Lord! I want you to know I can relate. As you well know, it is sometimes the case that things take a while for whatever reason. It is also sometimes the case that the Lord may wait. Whatever the case may be, the Lord allows it but is to be praised at all times anyway. I know we must be thankful in all things. Our Lord Jesus is worthy of praise every second eternally. He is so good and so gracious and so merciful. We have confidence in Him always. Blessings
