How to Pray Over Land

Prayerful Christians who walk and pray over the land see their area grow and thrive. We need to occupy our land. Frankly, if we’ve done prayer walks in the past, it’s time to do it again because so much has changed. Many have moved to a new land, others have seen neighbors move in, and some areas are expanding with new neighborhoods built within our communities. Our towns are changing.

Prayer walks can be around your neighborhood, the local college campus, a section of your town, your church’s property, a local park, or anywhere. The point is to pray. You can pray with your eyes fully open. But also ask that your spiritual eyes be awakened during these walks. Ask God to show you what you can do and how you can pray during your walking route. Here are some suggestions:

What to do during your walk

1. Bring a bag for trash– When there is trash on the route, be prepared to take care of it by bringing a baggie for trash.
2. Report any problems. Notify any safety concerns or maintenance issues to the appropriate agency, whether to an association, facilities, county, or city. For example, we have reported street lights that needed repair. Another problem resolved was the fire hydrants. The paint was chipped and faded, and they no longer stood out. After reporting, the fire hydrants in our neighborhood were all freshly painted. Another issue was a can of spilled paint that a youth rolled, leaving a trail of yellow paint along the street. Thankfully we have a graffiti task force. They came out with their power washer and made the street look clean again.
3. Friend other walkers– get to know the other walkers on your route. Heat comes early in Southern California. Most people who walk, walk early. It’s neat seeing the same exercisers and their canines.

What to pray for during your walk

1. Start by praying for protection both physically and spiritually. God knows your plan to pray, but the enemy does too. You may be tempted with distracting thoughts, insecurities, or anything Satan can use to dissuade you from your commitment to walk and pray.
2. Include worship. He is King of kings and Lord of lords. Whoever may own the property you walk, God is still over them. God has a plan and purpose for each parcel of land.
3. Thank God for the land and his creation.
4. Ask God to bless the land where your feet tread. Bless the land, the people, the animals, the foliage, the water. Any of God’s creations that actively use this land.
5. Ask God to bless houses, businesses, churches, and institutions while passing by.
6. Pray for residents to be good neighbors towards each other.
7. Pray for crime to be exposed and prosecuted.
8. Pray for divine appointments. By that, I mean I pray that God would have you at a particular spot at a specific time to meet a physical need or have a conversation with anyone He chooses.
9. Pray for the Christians in the community to be a beacon. A guiding light to their neighbors and communities.
10. Pray for the lost, depressed, handicapped, and penniless.
11. Pray for children to be safe in the streets, walkways, and at play.
12. Ask God what His heart is for that particular area.

Those are just a few suggestions on how to pray over the land. Let the Holy Spirit guide your prayers. He will show you what to pray for.

We may sit at home and be upset about the changes in our communities. But we all have the power through prayer and what we do to make our land flourish. The Holy Spirit will help us, but some of us need to get up and go into our communities to do more than just shop and do errands. Let’s occupy. Let’s make well. Prayer Walks are just one way we put legs to our resolve. So let’s pray over our land while we walk. Choose who you will serve this day; for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15
