Joining the Gym (again)

I’m feeling a bit hesitant about returning to the gym. I am out of shape and will have to work up to the routine I had when I stopped 7 months ago. Before quitting because of homeschool obligations, I had a session with a trainer to ensure I could effectively target all of my muscle groups using dumbbells and resistance bands and have a walking routine.

Although I had every intention of keeping up with my fitness regimen, I found myself struggling to remember the various exercises my trainer had taught me. In an effort to streamline my routine, I decided to follow a 15-minute women’s fitness video on YouTube. While I was able to finish the workout, I experienced severe discomfort afterwards and could barely move the following day.

Over the past few months, I’ve experimented with a few different diets to try to maintain my weight. In the fall, I tried a low-carb diet, and during Lent, I did a fast. While they helped to some extent, my weight is still higher than it was when I was going to the gym regularly.

One thing that caught me off guard was the weather this winter. It was much rainier and colder than usual here in Southern California. While I’m grateful for the rain, it did make it challenging to get outside and exercise. I know I’m not alone in feeling this way!

When it comes to fitness, I find that my faithfulness is key. While I struggle to maintain this aspect of my life at home, having a gym membership helps me stay committed and motivated to go a few times a week.

For if you live according to the flesh you will die,
but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body,
you will live.
 Roman 8:5 ESV

It seems I require external encouragement in this area, unlike my nightly indulgences in ice cream and desserts, which I can’t resist. Last night, I even went out to get ice cream after dinner, knowing I would be setting up auto-payment for my gym membership today. I figured I might as well treat myself before committing to my fitness routine.

It’s all too easy for me to fall into the trap of unhealthy eating and a sedentary lifestyle. It’s just my natural inclination. But when I indulge in these behaviors, I’m not thinking about my long-term health or how it will affect my ability to be present for my children and future generations. Instead, I spend all my time, energy, and money on doctors trying to fix problems that could have been prevented with a healthier lifestyle. I speak from experience, having paid dearly for neglecting my body in my forties.

If I could go back in time and talk to my younger self, I would say something like: “I know it may seem hard, but you need to prioritize healthy eating habits, with lots of fruits and vegetables, and cut back on carbs, sweets, and other unhealthy foods. And don’t forget to take care of your physical and mental well-being by exercising and finding moments of peace and tranquility. Above all, avoid stress as much as possible.” Of course, my younger self might not have listened or taken my advice to heart, but at least I would have tried.

I can attest to the fact that each decade brings its own unique set of challenges. We often struggle to navigate these obstacles as they arise without even considering what the future may hold. Perhaps this is why the Bible cautions us against worrying needlessly about tomorrow. Instead, it’s important to focus on the present and deal with tomorrow’s problems when they come.

So don’t worry about tomorrow,
for tomorrow will bring its own worries.
Today’s trouble is enough for today.
Matthew 6:34 NLT

I’ve decided to focus on the present and take action towards my fitness goals. Therefore, I’m enrolling in a gym membership for the summer.

  1. Oh, how I can relate! I’m so far behind on my “good intentions” to get back into exercising. I’ve only been able to get in the steps (between 4-5 miles a day), but I haven’t touched a barbell in more than three months. I’ll pray for you if you’ll pray for me!!! Let’s get going!!
